Burma Girl edition by Ruth Sims Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
"Burma Girl," by Ruth Sims. Untreed Reads. 2010.
"Burma Girl," is a Gothic tale of two elderly sisters who reside in a large Victorian house full of dust and decay. The dwelling sits in the midst of a neighborhood of single story houses as a result of their father cannibalizing the estate in order to keep the Burma girl. The sisters have lived with the ghosts of the past for many years. They don't go out because their father kept them in--even though by the time we meet the women, he has been dead for a while. The elderly sisters have taken over for the old man by isolating themselves from all that is outside their moldering domicile. This renders the madness passed on by the father to the daughters plausible.
The oldest sister, Endurance, tells the story through several flash backs. They were born to an invisible mother and a father who cared about the Burma girl more than his family, more than life itself. The mother dies first and the sisters take care of their father until he is ninety, and then Endurance, true to her name, can take no more of his abuse and poisons him.
The women live out their lives alone because their father sent suitors away. In the manner of the Southern Gothic the only role for a woman with no husband is servitude. You know, I was always on Emily Grierson's side when she poisoned her perspective husband, Homer Baron, in Faulkner's "A Rose for Emily." She didn't want to be alone and she made sure that she wasn't. In "Burma Girl," Durie poisons her father because she's sick of his abuse, and I was right there with her. If it would have been me, I'd have done it sooner. But Endurance ends up taking care of her younger sister as the sister dies. I can't say more without giving away crucial aspects of the story. Who the Burma Girl is and how she dominated this family's life is clear by the time she makes her appearance in the end.
Good, very short little story with a surprising end. You will read it in an hour. Not really about Burma. .
