From this foundation, a very entertaining tale is constructed.

I was given this book as a paperback for my birthday by a friend, and immediately thought this is not my type of reading material even before I opened it. To add to my misery I was given the sequel as well. My friend told me that it was a fantastic read and that I was going to love it, and to persevere past the first ten pages. So basically this is what I did. After plodding my way through a rather slow start and not really enjoying it, I realised that I was becoming hooked on the storyline and was interested in what was going to happen to the characters. By half way through I couldn’t put it down. I have never heard of the author before, but she can certainly spin a ‘good yarn’ and Mathew, who is the protagonist is so well developed as a character and not stereotyped in any way.This is a brilliant read, and is a book I would never have considered by just reading the Amazon publicity. You get the feeling at the beginning that it is not like other stories, but you can’t put your finger, exactly on the reason why. There is so much rubbish out there these days, and it’s not very often that you find a five star read. This is one of them, and I highly recommend it, no matter what genre of novels you enjoy. A good book is simply just that; something that will keep you reading for hours. This book ticked all of the boxes for me and I am already half way through the next. Give it a try. But please, get past the first ten pages before forming an opinion.

This is an intriguing book. Firstly, the book starts off with Matthew, who is the middle brother among 3. Matthew's mother is in an abusive relationship with his step dad. And the story kicks off with Matthew standing up to his step-father's antics.
I really felt for Matthew. It was really a misfortune of circumstances that he was in such a situation. I also felt that the characters were reasonably well written. This is the strong point of the book, that the characters' grief and pain is so believable. You want them to live a happy life but the book does not point in that direction.
I felt Matthew solely carries this book on his shoulder. All the side characters are unnecessary.
I enjoyed reading this book. Especially the end. Leaving the book on such a cliffhanger! I just picked up the next book in the series right then.
This is an intriguing series. I want to see where it is connected and where it lands up to.
Matthew and Ben
This is a story of Matthew, Ben and violence. The book is crafted with care. The conversation is well done, and the story flows well. Ben and his violence is a central source of conflict. The body count adds up page by page. It is the snake in paradise. Ben deserves his own fate. Payback to Ben is sweet. Matthew sees his mother become a target of violence. Domestic abuse has an impact on children, and leaves many scars on all concerned. A child may also respond with violence of his own as the years pass. One victim becomes many. The violence and the fate of Matthew builds a tale that draws the reader forward, and holds his interest. Bravo!
This was a whirlwind of a read! The author tells a story of a child, Matthew, who bears the weight of the world on his shoulders as he witnesses the beatings of his mother by his step-father. Matthew is the middle child of three boys, and there is a plethora of mystery behind his past, his father, and who he really is. Because of the abuse in his home, and the confusion behind why his mother permits the beatings, Matthew's story stumbles forward, creating a need to know more.
As the story progresses, the author does well, to show how Matthews life is being shaped, by his choices and actions. I was drawn into his life and wanted to protect the boy from the abuse and violence he was experiencing. The ending leaves you wanting more, and I'm excited to start the next book in the series!
